Toronto's Top Home

Only one year old, this house's history has yet to be made.

Though it looks like an old family property, this home is a recent addition to Toronto's Bridle Path estate neighborhood.

The 30,000 square-foot home took five years to build and was completed in 2000. Now listed at $20 million Canadian (about $13 million U.S.), it is the most expensive property in Canada's largest city.

While most homes in the Bridle Path neighborhood are set on two acres, this property has four acres of land. Other features that make the property Toronto's top listing include an indoor pool and private spa facilities attached to the his-and-hers dressing rooms. In addition to the five bedrooms in the main part of the house, there are two bedrooms in the staff quarters and a guest wing with its own living and cooking areas. The first floor has a music room and library as well as a grand foyer with twin staircases to the second floor.

Also on the first floor, an indoor swimming pool features a two-story atrium and a bridge over the center of the pool. The wet bar adjoining the pool has a built-in aquarium, and the bar area opens to the rear garden. An indoor cabana overlooks the pool from the second floor.

Finishes in the home include stained glass windows, oak flooring and molded plaster ceilings.

Forbes Fact

Now home to 4.5 million people, Toronto began as a cluster of trading forts used first by the French and then by the British. In 1793, the lieutenant governor of Upper Canada, Col. John Simcoe, chose Toronto as the site of Ontario's capital and changed its name to York. The name Toronto, the origin of which is uncertain but is thought to be either Huron or Mohawk, was restored when the city was incorporated in 1834. -- A.R.
